Although the high tides had passed for the month, there was still a 9.3 metre tide at 2:30pm and there was also the chance to see the Spotted Crake at Burton Mere Wetlands that had eluded us so far this month. As it turned out, we got three year ticks in one day!
As we arrived at the reception at Burton it was clear that something was showing and it turned out to be the elusive Spotted Crake. It was proving a bit hard to see as it only occasionally ducked in and out of the reeds surrounding the pool on the right of the hide. Eventually it managed to show itself and we got brief but good views. Year tick number one.
As the hide was pretty busy we decided to go down to the Inner Marsh Farm hide, stopping off at the blinds by the bridge on the boardwalk where we got our second year tick of the day – four Greenshanks. Down at Inner Marsh Farm there were another four Greenshanks as well as a few Dunlin and a group of Spotted Redshank. Out on the mud there were a couple of Ringed Plover and eventually we got our third year tick – a single Curlew Sandpiper.
We walked back to the reception hide and managed to get another view of the SPotted Crake which had moved around the edge of the pond a bit more.
From here we went to Parkgate and managed to get Great WHite Egret, Marsh and Hen Harriers so a nice finish to the day.
