Morning Visit to Sandbach Flashes 10th October 2012

We missed the first birding group date of the month which was at Sandbach Flashes due to a dental appointment but we did go there the following day by way of keeping up with what the birding group is doing. We started off by parking on the left side of the road overlooking Pump House Flash and the higher ground behind it. There were were around 250 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 100 Wigeon, 1 Mute Swan, ten Mallard, a few Cormorants, Moorhen. Lapwing and Coot. In the surrounding trees we saw a Sng Thrush and Chaffinch, Wood Pigeon and Magpies.

We crossed the road and had a quick look at Field Farm Flashes where there were a few more Wigeon and quite a few Black-headed Gulls and Lapwings. We walked down the path in the direction of the farm but there was nothing unexpected there. We came back up and went on to Elton Hall Flash where we were rather surprised to see that there was no feed in the feeders or on the bird table and there was an almost complete lack of the usual woodland birds one would expect to find there. It wasn’t a great deal better on the water. There were around 30 Teal and a few Shovelers and Shelduck. The same flock of Lapwings were constantly flying from flash to flash. There were more Wigeon and Cormorants but, all in all it was a very quiet day and a bit disappointing compared to previous visits.
