Re:Neil Line, My line 3 years 2 months ago #3895 MataNiall New ancestor : Thomas Neil born 1793 Donegal, Ireland. Died aged 60 of Cholera, Glasgow. So i've found my irish ancestor :D. Re:Neil Line, My line 1 year 1 week ago #8153 billneilfamily Dear Matthew, Thanks for your reply. I have been trying to contact you in various ways for a while so I am happy that we have made contact at last. My paternal family history has been stuck for some time at the birth of my ancestor John Neil who was the son of son of a Thomas Neill and I was wondering if the Thomas Neil death you refer to was the death of his father. I have had a look at the death entry you quote in the register of deaths for Cathcart and is says that Thomas died of Cholera on 7th February 1854. This means he would have been born circa 1794 It is possible that this refers to my / our Thomas Neill who was married to an Agnes Feran. The only reference I have to these people is the recording of the baptism of their son, John, who was born 14th April 1836 and baptised 4th July 1836. This is recorded in the registers of St. Andrew's Cathedral, Glasgow. If this Thomas was the father of John then Thomas would have been aged approx forty years when he was born. As I mentioned, so far I have not managed to get any further back than this, so this is why I was so interested in this death and I was hoping that you (or your father) might know of a reason to think that this Thomas Neil was indeed the father of John Neil who went on to marry Sarah Cassidy. I don't know how into family history you are at the moment but I know a little bit more about your ancestors that might interest you so if you want to know what I have discovered you can read on. If you think that your father may be interested in corresponding on this subject, please feel free to give him my email address (which you can also use) to discuss this offline if you prefer. You can email me at "emailbillinmanchester@gmail.com" How I think we are connected is as follows : Marriage of John Neil and Sarah Cassidy John Neil, the son of Thomas Neill and Agnes Feran, married Sarah Cassidy who was born in Ireland in 1841. Her parents, John and Bridget Cassidy, and her sister, Anne, and brother, John, can all be found in the 1851 census return for "Back Land, Pit Street, Eaglesham, Renfrewshire" John and Sarah married on 15 October 1860 at 148 Hospital Street, Glasgow. The registration describes them as John Neil, aged 23, iron turner, journeyman, bachelor, of 54 Main Street, Glasgow, the son of Thomas Neil, handloom weaver and Agnes Fern (both deceased) and Sarah Cassidy, aged 20, cotton factory worker, single, of 54 Main Street. The daughter of John Cassidy, labourer and Bridget Brannan. Of interest here is that John's father, Thomas, is said to have been dead in October of 1860 John and Sarah lived with Sarah's family at 54 Main Street, Gorbals and were to be found there (confusingly recorded as John and Sarah McNeil) at the 1861 Census. Children of John Neill and Sarah Cassidy JOHN b. 9 Apr 1862 AGNES b. 3 Jul 1863 ELISABETH b.18 Jan 1867 SARAH b. 5 Aug 1869 MARY b. 5 May 1871 THOMAS b.28 Dec 1872 JAMES b. 3 Dec 1874 CHARLES b. 21 Aug 1876 MARY b.28 Mar 1879 (the first Mary died aged five months so the name was re-used as was often the custom) Deaths of John Neill and Sarah Cassidy John died 30 Dec 1911 at 174 Centre Street, Glasgow and Mary Anne died 7 May 1916 at 10 Eglinton Lane, Glasgow Marriage of John Neil (aka O'Neill) and Mary Anne Chrystal My ancestor - and yours - was John and Sarah's first son, John (actually registered at birth as John O'Neill), who married Mary Anne Chrystal on 2 Oct 1880 at St. John's Chapel, Portugal Street, Glasgow. John Neil is described as a contractor's carter, bachelor, aged 19, of 4 Surrey Street, Glasgow. The son of John Neil, boiler maker's labourer and Sarah Cassidy and Mary Anne Chrystal is described as a tobacco spinner, spinster, aged 19, of 108 Rutherglen Loan, Glasgow. The daughter of Timothy Chrystal, house painter, journeyman and Mary McFillan. Children of John Neil (aka O'Neill) and Mary Anne Chrystal MARY ANN b. 16 Jul 1881 SARAH b.10 Sep 1883 AGNES b. 26 Mar 1888 JOHN b. 1 Jun 1890 TIMOTHY CHRYSTAL b. 13 Jan 1893 ELIZABETH CHRYSTAL b. 25 Jun 1895 SUSAN LOGAN b. 7 Oct 1897 CHARLES b.30 Apr 1899 This is where our ancestry diverges. Your ancestor was Charles Neil was born 30 April 1899. At the census of 1901 he was living with his brothers and sisters and parents at 21 Salisbury Street, Govan. He is aged one year. By the next census of 1911 the family unit is much reduced with many of Charles' brothers and sisters old enough to be living apart from their parents. The youngest two children, Charles (aged 12) and Susan (aged 13) are still with their parents, John and Mary Anne Neil, but now the family are described as "boarders" in the household of an Alex and Margaret Kemp at 6 Eglinton Lane, Govan. The enumerator had originally written "lodger" and then corrected it to "boarders". ("Boarders" sat at the same table as the head of the household and his family but a "lodger" did not. ) I was very interested to read about your descent from that point on. As for me, I am descended from Timothy Chrystal Neil. He married Margaret McDonald and their children were John McDonald Neil b. 15 Jun 1918, Mary Ann Chrystal b. 25 Nov 1919 and Timothy Chrystal b. 9 Nov 1921. They were all born at 1 South Stirling Street. Glasgow. Mary Ann died aged one and a half years. Timothy Chrystal died aged three and a half months. This left my father, John McDonald Neil, as the only surviving child. His mother, Margaret McDonald died four years after Timothy Chrystal's death. She died aged 31 years. Timothy Chrystal Neil died in 1935 aged 42 years. So by the time my father was eighteen he had lost his father, mother and both his siblings ! This presumably explains why he never spoke about his side of the family when I was young. Now, of course, I wish I had asked but he died when I was fourteen years old anyway. My father, John McDonald Neil had three sons, Colin b. 1946, Raymond b. 1947 and myself, William, b. 1951. I hope you find the above interesting and if you want any more information on the part of your ancestry that we share just ask as I may already have researched it. As for me, well I am interested in the Thomas Neil death. I have not as yet found any other children to Thomas Neill and Agnes Feran and have not found the death of Agnes Feran so I am pretty stuck and really need to find out where Thomas Neill was born. One area where you might be able to help me with your knowledge of the area is the question of where Thomas Neill resided at he time of his death. The death register entry seems to read "Thomas Neil ****** residing at ********** died of Cholera on the 7th February 1854 aged 60" The first bit may be his occupation and that may be "weaver" but I cannot read the second bit that mentions where he resided. Can you make it out or does it look familiar to you ? Anyway, sorry to have taken up so much of your time if you are still reading this. If you or your father or any other posters would like to ask or add something I would be most happy to engage in a correspondence either on this site or off-site using the email address at the top of this page. Best wishes and thank you for replying to my post. Bill Neil Re:Neil Line, My line 1 year 2 months ago #8127 MataNiall It was my father who done the research at the Mitchell library in Glasgow, wish i could expand more but that was all the information i found out. I'm sure if i put time and money into it i could find out more but so far that's all i know.
