Visit to Burton Mere Wetlands and Inner Marsh Farm 26th September 2013

After a bit of a disappointing visit to Pennington Flash with the birding group a couple of days before we thought it would be good to try Burton Mere Wetland. We had good weather and at the reception hide there were some Curlew Sandpipers showing well and on the edge of the pool nearest the hide. Someone pointed out a Common Gull amongst a mass of Black-headed Gulls and there were some Snipe and Black-tailed Godwits. We took a walk down to the Reedbed Hide but, even though there was a lot more water there than on our previous visit, there still wasn’t much there. There were large numbers of Greylag Geese and a a fair number of Canada Geese. Other than that, most of the action was always looking like it was going to be over at Inner Marsh Farm.

We headed back to the reception hide and walked out towards the left to see what we could see out that end of the site. We saw a couple of Buzzards and around the site in general we saw a Kestrel and some Goldfiches and Tits.

We drove over to Inner Marsh Farm and that was busier with a fair number of Snipe and Black-tailed Godwits as well as four Curlew Sandpipers. There were large numbers of Teal and a few Ruff. On our way there we also saw a couple of Kestrels, one of which was being mobbed by a Blackbird.

We took a bit of a walk across the Marsh but we weren’t sure where we were supposed to be going so we stopped after a bit and returned to the car. A bit disappointing again but it was nice to see the Curlew Sandpipers. We seem to have had a lot of sightings of them recently but they are a very attractive bird so it’s nice to see them.
