Woolston Eyes : 13th April 2014

Woolston Eyes : 13th April 2014

After trying to get there for quite some time, we eventually got to Woolston Eyes where we hoped to see some Black-necked Grebes. AS we crossed the bridge there were lots of Wrens int he brambles under the bridge and on the water there were a few Tufted Ducks. Chiffchaffs were singing away.  On the water of number three bed we saw at least six Black-necked Grebes but there were probably more there as they were constantly diving down to feed and popping up elsewhere. There were mainly Tufted Ducks on the water with a few Great Crested Grebes. Looking over to the canal we got views of a pair of Red-crested Pochards – a male and a female.

The first birding group day of the month was to Point of Ayr where there was to be a 9.9 metre high tide at 12.45pm. We estimated that we would need to be at the hide approximately two hours before and as we all arrived at the car park by 10.30am we were in a good position to take advantage of this tide. Unfortunately some of the group had the idea that we had time to take a walk over the dunes first rather than after the tide with very unfortunate results.
