Mallorca Holiday 2nd May 2015 : Walk from Port De Pollenca to Cala Sant Vincenze
We tried the other walk from north coast to west coast, from Port De Pollenca to Cala Sant Vincenze. This was a much more difficult walk than the Bouquer valley one. The path is really just the bed of a water run-off from the mountains and can be difficult to even see and a bit of a potential ankle breaker. Last year we met a couple in Cala Sant Vincenze who had just done the walk and had been traumatised by it because there had been a heavy rain the day before and the rocks had been extreme slippery. This is not a walk to do when there has been rain.
When you do get to the top, however, the rest of the route is easy with some sections fairly good rough roads. One’s attention is concentrated on where to put your feet on the way up so it is not that easy to bird watch on the ascent. Having said that we did see a large bird of prey that we could not identify. We ran into a chap who said that he had seen a Golden Eagle a little earlier but it is perhaps optimistic to think that it was this bird we saw. Someone else we met a couple of days later suggested that there was an escaped Golden Eagle around.
We did manage to see a few Ravens and there were lots Stonechats around. There were also Swifts overhead and Greenfinch and Goldfinch were seen on the ascent. Some Short-toed Larks were also up on the tops.
Down at Cala Sant Vincenze this were much quieter with only Sparrows in the way of birds. We got the bus back which was a relief – I wasn’t looking forward to a walk back downhill into Port De Pollenca. From the bus we had some reasonable birding anyway seeing a few Ravens and a Kestrel and a much bigger bird of prey en route. Perhaps even the Golden Eagle ?
