Our Garden

A quiet month in the garden. A small group of Starlings eat daily, a Wren is an ever-present feature and is nesting in the Virginia Creeper at 1st floor level in the garden opposite our back garden. A juvenile Robin was seen once as were some juvenile Blackbirds. A small number of Goldfinch visit daily but it is generally quite quiet.

Birding Days Out

The birding group has finished its term so there are no birding mornings this month except the ones we choose to do ourselves, of which we only had a few. The first of these was to  Woolston Eyes on the 3rd of July where we got our annual quota of Black-necked Grebes and a Ruddy Duck as a bonus. On the 10th we got another “year tick” at RSPB Old Moore when we got excellent views of a pair of Garden Warblers, a bird we have only seen once before (at Martin Mere in 2012)

On the 21st of July we went to Burton Mere Wetlands and, although we didn’t see anything really special we got lovely views of a very large flock (50) of Little Egrets and some nice Spotted Reddshanks and Dunlin.

Our last birding outing of July was on the 24th when we went on a bit of a twitch to Chatterley Whitfield Colliery where we got a wonderful double; a Red-footed Falcon and a Black Redstart, the former a life tick and the latter a year tick. This finished off what is usually a rather quiet birding month but it hadn’t been too shabby for us
