Salinas de Janubio, Lanzarote 2nd March 2016
We hired a car from the 2nd of March for a few days and so we wanted to go back to some of our familiar birding haunts. On this day we returned to the Salinas de Janubio. We got all the birds from yesterday but we got a bird I had seen much less often.
As we walked the edge of the water to the seaward side of the lagoon we came across a small flock of Trumpeter Finched with a few Berhtlot’s Pipits mixed in with them. We watched for quite a while as they fed on some small plants on the gravelly lava. We also got a small flock of Turnstones and lots of Common Sandpipers. There were Greenshanks and Redshanks in small numbers and just a single Black-necked Grebe. The usual Black-winged Stilts were there as were a pair of Ruddy Shelduck. A couple of Kentish Plover were workignn their way around the perimiter of the lagoon.
It was a good morning’s birding and it was a better visit than our, all too brief, visit of the previous day.
