Moore Nature Reseve : 5th April 2016

The first birding group morning of the spring term saw a small turnout for a fairly quiet morning. We were all hoping that we would see a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and we were not the only people with that idea in mind. Normally we could be fairly hopeful of success at this time of year but apart from probably hearing one drum (soft and brief in length) that was the only evidence despite a lot of looking. Be that as it may, we still managed to get a couple of “year ticks”.

As we waited in the car park for the others to arrive, we immediately got three Buzzards, all being mobbed by Crows; there was a small group of Long-tailed Tits in the gorse bushes and a flock of House Martins were dashing around overhead.

When we were all collected, we headed off to the usual spot for the LSWs then walked up to the feeders. This is where we heard the LSW drum; it is almost opposite the place we looked at before with the woods in between. On the feeders were  the usual Tits and Chaffinches ans some Reed Buntings. Elsewhere thee were Jays and lots of Buzzards overhead all the time.

On the water there was a smattering of the usual ducks with a nice showing of Little Grebes. Up at the hide near the Raptor Watch platform the best was a small flock of Sand Martins flying around. This was our second “year tick” of the day.
