This day we decided to go to Santon Downham near Thetford Forest with the aim of possibly finding some woodland or heathland birds. At the Forestry Commission office we picked up some maps and a helpful ranger suggested we go back down the road we had come down until we reached marker 21 (which was between Hartling Drove and the A134), a part of the forest that was clear fell.
We walked down to where the clear fell started and before long we got Stonechat and Yellowhammer and lots of Whitethroat. The best sighting was a brief view of three Woodlarks, a year tick.
Next we drove to Lynford Arboretum which was a bit disappointing. The feeders were empty so no birds were attracted to the open area. We walked down to the river and there we got good views of Blackcap and Whitethroat. And also heard Chiffchaff, Song Thrush, Willow Warbler and Wren etc.
Apart from the Woodlark, the only other good tick was in Thornham when we took a dusk walk to the Lifeboat Inn via the path to the old harbour between the fields and the reed bed. There we heard (loudly) but did not see a Grashopper Warbler – possibly in exactly the same bush as I heard it last year.
So not a great deal of birding today but a couple of good year ticks
