The first birding group outing of the month was an overnighter to Yorkshire taking in RSPB Blacktoft Sands and North Cave Reserve; at the former I got a very nice Yellow Wagtail, a bird that has been a bit elusive for me for a couple of years. On the second day we went over to RSPB Bempton Cliffs where we got a number of cliff nesting birds that were year ticks including more than the usual number of Puffins for the cliffs.
We missed the next birding group outing which was a return to the Goyt Valley. I understand that no Ped Flycatchers were seen. In fact, not many birds were seen but apparently the Ring Ouzels had young they were feeding at the quarry. We missed this visit because we were away in Shropshire for a couple of days where we got Sparrowhawk, Buzzard and Red Kite as well as nice views of Goldcrest and Song Thrush as well. I could have sworn the Sparrowhawk was actually a Goshawk but couldn’t prove it.
From the garden we had a brief flypast from a group of Ring-necked Parakeet on the 9th and in the garden, on the10th, we had the pleasure of both a Nuthatch and a Bullfinch on our feeders. I can’t remember the last time we had a Bullfinch so that was very gratifying.
We missed a couple of birding opportunities due to haveing a virus that seems to be doing the rounds so apart from the sea cliff birds and the Yellow Wagtail it was a bit of a disappointing month for us. Never mind; next month we are doing our round trip of Scotland and we are sure to get some good birding there.
