The first birding group outing of the year was to Burton Mere Wetlands where we got good views of a Peregrine attacking a large flock of Lapwing. We got a few Whooper Swans and some Snipe. The highlight, probably, was on the field on our way down to the barn. This field is usually empty but this day it was different.
There was a really good flock of mixed thrushes including Fieldfare, Redwing and Mistle Thrush. On the ground there were also Goldfinch and a single Pied Wagtail. Up at the bridge we got a single Pintail and the usual array of Teal, Shoveler and such.
We moved on to Neston Old Quay afterwards for a spot of lunch and a look for raptors but we didn’t have much luck only getting a rather distant Marsh Harrier.
