At a bit of a loss as to what to do as the weather got duller and starting drizzling lightly, Anne hit on the idea of going towards Fakenham to the Sculthorpe Moore Hawk and Owl Trust Reserve, a place we had not heard of before. Despite the weather we at least managed to get a good year tick there.
We paid our entrance fee and took advantage of the facilities before setting out on the circular path around this rather delightful little reserve. One of our first stops was a the bird feeders where little sliding doors can be opened to give a view of any birds feeding on them. My first glimpse gave me an immediate return – a year tick Marsh Tit. This was confirmed by the sightings board. It seems they do not get Willow Tit there.
We walked all the way round the boardwalk( which is a great piece of carpentry itself) and dropped in at all the hides. We didn’t see much from any of them except at the last one we got a holiday tick Bullfinch which was nice. However, there were no waders at all at the wader hides and generally the poor weather seemed to be putting all the birds off.
Above us, however, we did get Red Kite, Common Buzzard and a couple of Marsh Harriers. It was a bit of a modest return but we enjoyed it anyway and you can imagine it being much better in better wweather.
The afternoon was wearing on and it seemed quite a long time between Dotterel in the morning and Marsh Tit in the afternoon so we headed off home in the rain.
