After not much happening in January, largely as a result of being on holiday, February saw us return to UK birding.
We had two sets of birding outings in February. The first was an overnight visit to North Wales 14th – 15th February. Highlights here were Surf Scoter and Red-breasted Merganser at Llanddulas, Shags at Little Orme, Red-throated Diver at Pensarn and Snow Bunting and Ringed Plover at Horton’s Nose Nature Reserve.
On 21st and 23rd we did the rounds of the sites on the Wirral with highlights being the big numbers and displays of Dunlin, Sanderling, Grey Plover and Knot at Hoylake, Spotted Redshank at Burton Mere Wetlands, Purple Sandpipers and Turnstones at New Brighton Marine Lake and another Snow Bunting at Wallasey Beach.
Bird numbers in the garden are fairly modest but usually there are about 6-8 Goldfinch and sudden bursts of House Sparrows. A couple of Robins seem to have paired up and the droppings on the back wall greenery suggests that they re at least perching there a lot. We have one of our Grey Wagtails back and it is a daily visitor loafing around for most of the day.
