Year Ticks June 2023

  • Black-winged Stilt at Burton Mere Wetlands 6 June 2023
  • Ruddy Shelduck at Burton Mere Wetlands 6 June 2023
  • Garden Warbler at Marbury Park 27 June 2023

The first birding group visit of June was to Burton Mere Wetlands on the 6th June where we got some good birds including a Black-winged Stilt and a pair of Ruddy Shelduck – both UK year ticks. We missed the birding group trip to North Wales which was scheduled for 12th – 13th June as we were in Mallorca.

We had had such poor weather earlier in the year, when we had had been in Lanzarote, and I had been ill after that, that we decided we needed another break – but this time sunny! It was a bit last minute, but we arranged to stay in a serviced apartment at the Illa D’Or hotel in Puerto Pollenca for 10 days. It was very, very hot so we didn’t actually do much birding but we still managed to see a few good birds which is detailed here.

We managed to fit in the last birding group outing of June which was to Marbury Country Park on 27 June where we got fantastic views of a pair of Garden Warblers. There were lots of singing Blackcaps, Wrens, Song Thrushes etc and it was a really nice morning; finished off by a visit to the Spinner and Bergamot.

In the garden we continue to be plagued by Woodpigeons and Feral Pigeons and they are impossible to shift. We have been getting more visits from the local Parakeets who eat as many sunflower seeds as all the other birds and are becoming a bit of a nuisance to the smaller birds.

We did have an unusual sighting of a juvenile Mistle Thrush on the 8th of June but, other than that, it was the usual fare of small numbers of Tits and the odd Blackbird, Robins and Dunnock. A few House Sparrows are visiting regularly but not as many as earlier in the year and a small band of loyal Goldfinches is regular – though it is hard to tell if our feeders are part of the round for a bigger population of Goldfinches or whether the same ones come back several times a day.
