Some Birds from Puerto Pollenca 10 – 20 Jun 2023

We had had such poor weather earlier in the year, when we had had been in Lanzarote, and I had been ill after that, that we decided we needed another break – but this time sunny! It was a bit last minute, but we arranged to stay in a serviced apartment at the Illa D’Or hotel in Puerto Pollenca for 10 days. It was very, very hot so we didn’t actually do much birding for a number of reasons including the heat, the lateness in the season, the fact that Anne did not want to hire a car and also that we could not make contact with our usual guide in Mallorca.

We did do a little bit of local birding, though, around La Gola and the Boquer Valley. There wasn’t a lot at La Gola – probably because it was so late in the season – but we did get a few birds at the valley including a marvellous view of a family of Crag Martins on one of the big Boulders to the left of the path through the valley. Three chicks were perched side-by-side on the boulder as their parents flew around the rock picking out insects to feed to them. I had taken my small scope so we got great views of this and it only stopped when we realized we were frying in the heat. Unfortunately, my breathing is so poor these days that the effort of walking the pathto the end – which I have done many times in the past was a bit beyond me which is saddening. Nevetheless I made it part of the way which, these days, is an achiement itself – especially in the great heat.
