March was dominated for us by our “holiday of a lifetime” to San Francisco and Hawaii where we clocked up forty species and twenty-six of those were lifers. This wasn’t a particularly impressive number of species but it wasn’t a birding holiday; if anything it was Humpback Whales we wanted to see. Be that as it may you never stop birding and we got some lovely birds – even if most of them were not endemics and plenty of them were introduced int he 19th and 20th centuries.
This left us with very little of the month left as we got back on the 21st and we had a lot of catching up to do. Be that as it may we did manage to get to the birding group outing to the Wirral taking in Burton Mere Wetlands briefly before going to Riverbank Road for a high tide which wasn’t very impressive, and then a drop-in at Neston Old Quay which at least netted us a ringtail Hen Harrier and a Marsh Harrier so it ended well. Over the day we got three “year ticks”, Meadow Pipit, Skylark and Hen Harrier.
