Burton Mere Wetlands 22nd May 2018

Our visit to RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands was another fine day and we immediately managed to get a couple of Mediterranean Gulls on the scrape. There were lots of chicks of all sorts on the water including a few Avocet chicks. The scrape had the usual ducks and just outside reception we got our first Whitehtrat of the year.

Walking down to the barn we had the unusual site – the reserve staff say it isn’t that unusual – of a Buzzard and a Red Kite interacting above the barn area. Walking down to the Marsh Covert hide there were several of Sedge and Reed Warblers and a lot of Cetti’s Warbler song as well – I even managed to see one reasonably well.

At the Marsh Covert hide we immediately got two year ticks, side-by-side, Ringed and Little Ringed Plover. The usual Redhank and Shelduck were there and a pait of Teal as well.

We walked down to Inner Marsh Farm getting views of more Whitethroat and Sedge Warblers but it was pretty quiet down there. Still, as can be seen from below, we managed to get a reasonnably list of birds for the day.
