Little Bustard Mickletown Ings 8th August 2019

Very distant Little Bustard Mickleton Ings 8th August 2019

Reports of a very uncommon Little Bustard seen near Leeds, combined with a particularly good description of location and parking, encouraged us to drive up there. The sighting was:

male still in field at Mickletown Ings; park carefully on Pinfold Lane (LS26 9JS) and take footpath north immediately east of 35 Lower Mickletown Road to view fields at SE403273. Please view only from footpath and do not enter fields

We pushed our liuck and wen straight to number 35 where we actually found pleanty of parking. As we left the car a birder pointed us down the lane just where we had parked and within a few seconds someone had put us on to the bird. Unfortunately it wasn’t in the field but down in a hollow between the field and some reeds.

It was a bit of a tease but, eventually, we got some acceptable views of the distant bird and some wobbly video. This might be the rarest bird we have seen in the UK so I am looking forward to the write-ups about it. A Little Bustard seen at Slimbridge at the end of July was said to have been only the 27th visit by Little Bustard to the UK since 1950. So perhaps we have seen the 28th !

ps Pete Hines has a much better video that was taken a couple of days earlier when the bird was much more in the open field. Another winner for Pete
