Nunnery Lakes and Weeting Heath 9th May 2022

If Santon Downham and the other sites around Thetford were a little disappointing the previous day, our visit to BTO Nunnery Lakes made up for it this day. We parked at the side of the river, crossed the bridge and and walked along the side of the Little Ouse River until we reached the next bridge. From there we got good views of a Kingfisher – a good year tick but not the only one

Further along we got fairly good views of a Lesser Whitethroat which was singing and, thanks to the Collins Bird Guide app, was able to compare the songs to get a positive ID. The snippet of song was indistinguishable from the song the actual bird was singing. Anne wasn’t sure which was which without looking.

Further along, after a bit of scouring of the foliage, I found a Spotted Flycatcher, anothe year tick. On top of all this we got a wholse series of other birds that made for a great morning walk. Again the weather was beautiful.

As we were reasonable close to Weeting Heath, we thought we would return there and have a look for the Stone Curlews again and this time we were treated to fantastic views of both the adults walking around with their two chicks which was the first time we had seen Stone Curlew chicks; a new level of cute with their tiny bodies and big legs and feet. We also got a few other birds but nothing special. My breathing did not encourage me to walk up the hill on the other part of the reserve (across the road) to look for Wood Larks, though someone had seen one early morning.
