Mallorca Holiday April – May 2015 Summary
Mallorca Holiday April – May 2015 Summary
Guide Books
The two books I relied on were, firstly, Dave Gosney’s book ““Finding Birds in Mallorca” (which comes with a DVD of the sites in the book and some of the birds you can see at them and, secondly, “A Birding Tourist’s Guide to Majorca” by Maties Rebassa et al, which is a more recent book, more colourful and a good companion to the Gosney book, but it does not replace it.

Mallorca Holiday 5th May 2015 : Formentor Beach
After a pretty busy day yesterday we decided not to do too much birding today so we got the bus to Formentor Beach with the idea of just having a bit of a walk around the area of the beach in the pine trees just in case anything interesting showed itself.

Mallorca Holiday 4th May 2015 : S’Albefura
I was keen to fit in at least one more visit to S’Albufera before the end of our holiday and this time Anne came with me. She was keen to see the species that she had missed when I last spent the day at S’Albufera. We didn’t spend too much time on the main canal because we really wanted to get to the Sa Roca Pools hides before they got too busy. We did, however, see the usual Little and Cattle Egrets, Cormorant and the avenue was full of calling Nightingales and Cetti’s Warblers.

Mallorca Holiday 2nd May 2015 : Walk from Port De Pollenca to Cala Sant Vincenze
Mallorca Holiday 2nd May 2015 : Walk from Port De Pollenca to Cala Sant Vincenze
We tried the other walk from north coast to west coast, from Port De Pollenca to Cala Sant Vincenze. This was a much more difficult walk than the Bouquer valley one. The path is really just the bed of a water run-off from the mountains and can be difficult to even see and a bit of a potential ankle breaker. Last year we met a couple in Cala Sant Vincenze who had just done the walk and had been traumatised by it because there had been a heavy rain the day before and the rocks had been extreme slippery. This is not a walk to do when there has been rain.

Lots of activity now with Tits gadding around, a Dunnock furtling, a Robin putting in an appearance. the two Mistle Thrushes continue their daily visits. The inevitable Woodpigeon has been joined by a Stock Dove. A Sparrowhawk was spotted briefly. There are also a few Goldfinch and a Wren. Mixed weather at the beginning of the month but some sunnier weather towards the last week of the month.

Mallorca Holiday 29th April 2015 : La Gola and Boquer Valley
I was supposed to have a quiet day reading and doing a bit of shopping for the necessaries while Anne took the bus to Pollenca Town so I thought I would walk into town via the La Gola mini reserve. There had been a bit of overnight rain a couple of nights ago so this might explain why the normal Greenshank and Sandpiper weren’t there as the water levels were a bit high. I spent quite some time looking for a Serin, eventually getting two.
