Heswall Fields 1st August 2019
On the Deeside Birding Web Site there are daily reports of bird sightings and counts. One of the places that I had often wordered about was Heswall Fields. Some time ago, we did a ranger-led walk from Thurstaston Country Park along the beach to a good viewpoint at Heswall Fields. Then we returned back along the Wirral way to Thurstaston but I was curious about how you might get there from the other direction so we decided to check this out.

Dove Stones Reservoir 4th July 2019
We were meeting friends near Holmfirth but they were delayed and this gave us a chance to have a look at the Dove Stones reservoir which was en route. Oddly enough, this had cropped up as a possible site of interest to the birding group at the meeting on the 2nd of July when we were working out the autumn schedule

Birding Group Marbury Park 2nd July 2019
Proposed Dates for Autumn Term 2019
The first birding group day out of July was also the last as it was “end of term”. It was quite a nice day and although cloudy it meant that the lighting was very suitable for birding. There wasn’t much around but we had a nice walk anyway and ended up at The Spinner and Bergamot pub for lunch and our planning session for next term. See below for schedule.

Burton Mere Wetlands and Parkgate 2nd January 2019
We didn’t get out on the first day of the year but we did manage the 2nd and we were in need of some exercise and fresh air after Christmas and New Year. With a dry, clear and cold day we thought a trip uo to Parkgate would be a good chance to try for some of the birds of prey now back on the marsh for winter. We were not disappointed.

Birding Group Wales Trip 4th-5th June 2018
The birding group overnigh trip was to RSPB South Stack so, as usual, we all met up at RSPB Conwy around 10:30 to make our plan. Our plan was, naturally, our usual one. We had a quick look around RSPB Conwy before heading off for the Spinnies at Aberogwen near Tal y Bont. En route we got Red Kite and at Conwy we got our very first House Martins of the year which is quite extraordinary and suggests something is not quite right with the House Martin Population this year as it is quite something to see Swifts before House Martins !

Burton Mere Wetlands 22nd May 2018
Our visit to RSPB Burton Mere Wetlands was another fine day and we immediately managed to get a couple of Mediterranean Gulls on the scrape. There were lots of chicks of all sorts on the water including a few Avocet chicks. The scrape had the usual ducks and just outside reception we got our first Whitehtrat of the year.

Shapwick Heath and Ham Wall 22nd August 2016
Shapwick Heath and Ham Wall 22nd August 2016
This day was reserved for general sightseeing with our friends but we did manage to get a little bit of birding in as we took them to Shapwick Heath for a look at the Osprey. It had moved a bit to another tree but we still got fair views of it.
