High Tide : Hoylake, Riverbank Road and Burton Mere Wetlands 29th October 2019

The last Tuesdayof the month for the birding group was a trip to the Wirral starting at Hoylake at 10 am for an 11:35am high tide of 9.89 metres. It wasn’t particularly high but there haven’t been that many recently, so we were looking forward to and – for once – it was a lovely, wind-free and sunny day.

WWT Martin Mere 22nd October 2019

We had a birding group day lined up to be for RSPB Leighton Moss but reports on their web site and also by worl of mouth suggested that large parts of the reserve were under water so we decided to swop over to WWT Martin Mere where we had a reasonable day and good weather.

Guided Birding Brazo del Estes, Northern Doñana, Spain 6th October 2019

We holidayed in Spain for two weeks – one week in Seville and a second week in Cadiz. Although we were not on a birding holiday we did manage to fit in a six hour session with a guide that we found online. The company was Doñana Wings and our guide was Vicent Esteller, the manager of the company.

He picked us up from out hotel, The One-Shot Hotel in Seville about 8am and we drove the twenty minutes or so south-west of Seville to the “eastern branch” of the Guadalquivir River which was river on one side and rice paddy fields on the other. We would never have navigated this place ourselves but our guide was familiar with all the little dusty roads and by-ways that wound through the fields. We made eight or nine stopt atr various places and found some excellent birds everywhere.

Birding Group Martin Mere and Marshside 24th September 2019

The last birding group day of the month was left open for a decision nearer the time. The weather was predicted to be quite bad so a lot of people were put off but five of us took the risk and the risk was well rewarded with a good year tick and some great early Autumn sights.

Birding Group : Burton Mere Wetlands and Parkgate 17th September 2019

On the 17th we went to Burton Mere Wetlands with the birding group followed by a quick stop at Parkgate. It turned out to be a nice day in the end and we managed to get a couple of Little Stints pretty much straight away – a nice year tick for us – but we also got a total of forty-four species over the two sites including some interesting ones that we might not have expected.

Birding Group : Pennington Flash 10th September 2019

The first birding group morning of the Autumn term was to Pennington Flash where, although it was generally quite quiet, we still managed to get thirty-four species and it turned out to be quite a sunny morning after a little rain to start with.
