The difference between then and now was that now we could distinctly see some birds of prey flying around then area but I didn’t have my scope with me so we just had to accept that they were too distant to identify. By their size as would have said that they were Eagles though.

There wasn’t much we could do about that so we had to make the best of where we were We walked a bit up the main road to Cap Formentor but largely the birds were Chaffinches or Blackbirds and up in the air Swallow and Swifts. So far, so ordinary, but then I heard a very high pitched twittering and a scan of the pine trees nearby revealed two small birds flitting after each other. They were obviously “crests” but I could only see them from underneath. But when I saw yellow- orange shoulder patches I was sure that we had another “holiday tick” -two Firecrests. Try as we might we could not find that other local specialty, the Crossbill, but we pleased enough on a non- birding day to have added one more species to our holiday list. We returned to Port de Pollenca by boat and I did see one bird on the water but that was probably just a Shag; it disappeared under the water as soon as I had it in my bins.

Bird Sightings : Formentor Beach

Species

Count

Common Swift

10

Barn Swallow

6

Great Tit

1

Firecrest

2

Eurasian Blackbird

4

Common Chaffinch

100

House Sparrow

30

Mallorca Holiday 5th May 2015 : Formentor Beach After a pretty busy day yesterday we decided not to do too much birding today so we got the bus to Formentor Beach with the idea of just having a bit of a walk around the area of the beach in the pine trees just in case …

[12,8,10

post-5005","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-birding","category-birding-days-out","category-birding-on-holiday","item-wrap
