It was quite late by the time we got there so we cleaned up and then went out for a meal. The first thing we heard as we were leaving the cottage was a Cuckoo calling.

The whole village was full of hirundines and every tree had a singing Blackbird. A group of houses seemed to have a flock of House Martins in every roof. Later that evening I went out for a walk along a path that runs by a field where Owls are supposed to be hunting. I took the boardwalk and then the dirt track. As I tried to walk quietly down the track, I still managed to flush a number of animals including a fox and a Barn Owl. As if that wasn’t good enough I soon found myself standing over a clump of brambles from which a Grasshopper Warbler was reeling in a deafening manner. Needless to say I couldn’t see it.

As daylight started to fade away and the song of Reed and Grasshopper Warblers all fell away all that was left was the sounds of distant Oystercatcher. What a magical walk.

Year Tick : Barn Owl

Bird Sightings : 6th May Thornham

Species

Count

Eurasian Oystercatcher

6

Rock Dove

6

Common Wood Pigeon

10

Eurasian Collared Dove

6

Common Cuckoo

1

Barn Owl

1

Common Swift

6

Eurasian Jackdaw

10

Barn Swallow

8

Common House Martin

30

Sedge Warbler

2

Eurasian Reed Warbler

1

Common Grasshopper Warbler

2

European Robin

2

Eurasian Blackbird

6

Pied Wagtail

1

European Greenfinch

2

European Goldfinch

1

Thornham 6th May 2016 After our stop over at Horsey Mere, we stopped of at NWT Cley Marshes for a cup of tea and then ploughed on to Thornham where we were due to stay for a week.
