There is a change in the weather and, although it is still nice and sunny, a cold wind is blowing off the sea. This meant that a lot of smaller birds were hiding away in the bushes or reeds but I still saw a few and, as so often here, the first bird I heard as I left the house was a Cuckoo

Despite the wind I still got Reed and Sedge Warblers and Whitethroat. There was a good flock of Brent Geese on the marsh and I got fly – overs from Curlew and Little Egret. A pair of Linnet showed themselves nicely and I saw a lovely display from a male Skylark, on the ground and puffed up like a tennis ball singing to his female. It is little observations like this that add so much to a short walk.

Now it is time to leave Norfolk and head for Rutland Water for a bit of Osprey watching.

Bird Sightings : 13th May NWT Thornham

Species

Count

Brent Goose

40

Mallard

6

Great Cormorant

6

Little Egret

1

Common Moorhen

2

Eurasian Curlew

1

Black-headed Gull

20

Common Wood Pigeon

20

Common Cuckoo

2

Eurasian Jackdaw

20

Sky Lark

2

Common Chiffchaff

1

Sedge Warbler

3

Eurasian Reed Warbler

4

Common Whitethroat

2

Eurasian Blackbird

1

Common Chaffinch

6

Common Linnet

2

Thornham 13th May 2016 On our departure day from Thornham and Norfolk I took one last morning walk along the marsh and then through the reed beds up to the harbour.
