We had a pretty quiet August birding-wise. We had another interesting recce at Heswall Fields<\/a> on the 1st of the month and we dropped down to Parkgate where there has been a nice group of half a dozen Spoonbills roosting. By far the biggest event of the month, year and possibly our biring activities so far, was seeing the Little Bustard at Mickletown Methley<\/a>, probably our rarest UK bird to date. We got a good “year tick” on the 29th at RSPB Leighton Moss<\/a> where we got a small group of Curlew Sandpipers. Unfortunately we missed out on the Long-billed Dowitcher that had been at Martin Mere – it was gone before we could get there<\/p>\n The garden continues to be dominated by the House Sparrows with an ever-increasing flock always around. We get a Nuthatch and Ring-necked Parakeets occasionally. Young Goldfinches are on the feeders a lot – they seem to breed later in the Spring than other birds.<\/p>\n We have had to take drastic measures to keep the Feral Pigeons away – involving much chicken wire and reducing the number of feeders to cut down on spillage.
