The rain held off to give us a nice Spring day and the birds were definately full of spring themselves with lots of Wrens, Cetti’s and other small birds dashign around everywhere collecting nesting material and some even seemed to be collecting food items indicating nesting was happening – perhaps even chick rearing already!

So, apart from the general joy of Spring in the air we also got some year firsts as the warblers arrive for the breeding season.

In general it was pretty much the same as our previous visit on the 11th with lots of Avocets and Black-headed Gulls on the scrape and the usual array of ducks around. The Long-tailed Duck was showing well on the bridge pool as were the Pintails. There were Chiffchaffs and Cetti’s everywhere and I heard my first Willow Warbler of the year. As we went past the fish pond a single Swallow flew by – another year tick. We missed out on the Spotted Redshanks that had been around earlier and we didn’t see the Garganey down at Inner Marsh Farm. I believe both species were still around but a bit mobile.

I also got good views of two of the Common Whitethroats around the site – I think there were probably quite a few more. Anothe year tick was the first Reed Warbler of the year. All in all, a good day out with the first real signs of Spring springing.

We drove down to Parkgate where we got Great White Egret and Little Egret. The marsh was alive with House Sparrows foraging and a good number of Skylarks as well.

Bird Sightings : Burton Mere Wetlands 19th April 2022

Species

No

Greylag Goose

24

Canada Goose

30

Mute Swan

3

Common Shelduck

6

Northern Shoveler

40

Mallard

30

Northern Pintail

4

Common Teal

30

Tufted Duck

30

Long-tailed Duck

1

Common Pheasant

3

Little Grebe

2

Great Crested Grebe

2

Common Wood Pigeon

6

Common Moorhen

4

Common Coot

12

Pied Avocet

30

Eurasian Oystercatcher

3

Northern Lapwing

20

Black-tailed Godwit

50

Common Redshank

20

Black-headed Gull

80

Grey Heron

4

Little Egret

4

Eurasian Jackdaw

10

Carrion Crow

8

Eurasian Blue Tit

6

Great Tit

6

Eurasian Reed Warbler

1

Barn Swallow

1

Willow Warbler

1

Common Chiffchaff

6

Cetti’s Warbler

4

Long-tailed Tit

4

Common Whitethroat

2

Eurasian Wren

3

Eurasian Blackbird

3

European Robin

4

Common Chaffinch

1

European Goldfinch

6

Reed Bunting

1

The birding group had a morning out to Burton Mere Wetlands on 19th April.
